In 2009, the Alcoa/Mastic Siding brand was renamed Mastic Home Exteriors. Although Alcoa no longer exists in the marketplace, the siding remains on homes across the country, and it is estimated that twenty-five percent of homes with vinyl siding are covered by an Alcoa product. It manufactured a number of products including Grand Sierra with 14 color choices and a wood grain appearance.
History
Alcoa (Aluminum Company of America) was started in 1888 in Pittsburg where investors put up funds to create the company that would obtain the first US patent for aluminum. Early products included aluminum tea kettles, mess canteens for World War I, aircraft parts, Christmas trees, and aluminum siding.
Alcoa Home Exteriors merged with Mastic Home Interiors in 1989. Alcoa/Mastic was purchased by Ply Gem Industries in 2006, a privately-held company, and Ply Gem dropped the Alcoa name in 2009. Ply Gem of Kearny, Missouri also owns other well-known brands such as Georgia-Pacific, United Stone Veneer, Cellwood, Durabuilt, Variform, and Napco. Ply Gem employs 5,000 people and earns annual revenues of $1.5 billion.
Warranty
Alcoa product warranties state that the siding "will not rust or corrode because they are made of vinyl, and they will not flake or peel because there is no paint to flake or peel." A lifetime-limited warranty is offered guaranteeing that the product is free of material and workmanship defects at the time of installation. Its fade warranty further guarantees that "for a limited period" the vinyl will not fade excessively.
Owners of homes with the Grand Sierra and the Lake Forest lines of siding have registered many complaints of late about an excessive degree of fading. Consumers of Alcoa products have outlined their frustrations in dealing with the company which has not agreed to replace faded, warped and discolored siding under existing warranties.
